The Last Supper

When we first began attending the First Presbyterian Church, almost twenty years ago, I noticed that during Holy Week there was a notation on the bulletin board regarding Maundy Thursday.  I had never seen the word Maundy before and thought it very curious.  Maundy means, “The Thursday before Easter is known as either Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday.  Maundy is derived from the Latin word for ‘command’ and refers to Jesus’ commandment to the disciples to ‘Love on another as I have loved you,” according to Greg Garrison.

Maundy Thursday is the commemoration of the Last Supper.  ‘And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me.  And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one [Is] it I?  And another [said, Is] it I?  And he answered and said unto them, [It is] one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish.  The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written for him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed!  Good were it for that man if he had never been born.  And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake [it], and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.  And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave [it] to them: and they all drank of it.  And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed  for many.  Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.  And when they had sung a hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.’  Mark 14: 18-26   KJV

What an extraordinary command Jesus left his disciples of his day…and his disciples of today…with.  He instructed us to love each other as he has loved us.

This Last Supper directive would therefore apply to those Syrian babies that were killed by the brutal…inhuman Assad regime…that we avenged with fifty-nine scud missiles.  Perhaps it would be better if we allowed them and their parents into our Country…for the safe haven…that we claim we are based on?

Perhaps the homeless should receive shelter and food…rather than our assuring them that…we will pray for them?

Perhaps our Native American brothers and sisters should be considered and reverenced as the original Americans…and not abused and maligned and cavalierly ignored as to their heritage and rights?

Perhaps the African American should be exalted for their noble heritage and their dignity…and recognized for their extreme contribution to this country; rather than being persecuted and shunted aside in inner city poverty and profiled due to their skin color.

Jesus was a Jew.  He was not a milky white Anglo Saxon.

I love the Christian Faith…but it is more than a lovely story…its’ commandment regarding human relationships…are the core of the entire Faith.
